How we serve our community
Our commitment to serving our community has always been at the forefront of who we are and what we do. It’s a core principle of our co-operative model and part of our Credit Union’s foundation. We believe in supporting and building better communities and take pride in the commitment shown by our Board of Directors, Staff and Members in making their communities a better place for all families. Some of the initiatives we are focused on in 2017 are:
Annual Charity Golf Tournament – Comtech Fire Credit Union hosts the annual Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation Golf Tournament in Toronto, Ontario. Since our first tournament, we have raised in excess of $70,000 for the Foundation.
St Paul’s Breakfast Program – The St Paul’s Breakfast Program has been in operations for 25 years and Comtech Fire has been a proud supporter for the past 20 years. This program provides a nutritious balanced meal to over 100 under privileged children on a daily bases. Studies show that children who eat a good breakfast do better in school than children who do not.
Leadership Award – In 2007, we introduced a Youth Leadership Award. This award recognizes an outstanding grade 8 student who has made a positive contribution within their school community. Just as this student has been a mentor to others, Comtech Fire would like to be a mentor to them by offering them an opportunity to work with us over the summer and learn about all the jobs and skill sets required to work in a Credit Union. The student is paid while job shadowing and also receives a $200 cheque towards helping purchase their school supplies and or uniform.
Kindergarten Intervention and Needs Development (KIND Program) – Helps kindergarten children with behaviour problems and difficulty adjusting to the day-to-day routine of going to school. Teachers work with parents in a number of workshops to discuss issues on how they can both make school successful for the child. Empathy training activities and social skills are an important focus of the program in teaching these young children on how to get along with others. For the past 15 years, Comtech Fire has been a proud supporter of this wonderful community program.
St Paul’s Annual Community BBQ – This initiative started out as a BBQ for the grade 8 students at St Paul’s School during their Fun Day and over the past 20 years has grown into a Community BBQ for more than 500
Casual Day Funds – To help raise money for charities, each Friday our staff pays to dress down. The money raised throughout the year is then allocated to four charities picked by the staff. These charities have included the Salvation Army, Missionaries of Charity, Convenant House, Camp Bucko, Do it for Dad, Adopt a Family, Ottawa Snowsuits, Daily Bread Food Bank, Scott Mission, Red Door Women’s Shelter, Chum City Wish Fund and Sick Kids Hospital.
An ABC of the Battle of the Atlantic – We're the hosts to this amazing teaching resource detailing Canada's role in the Atlantic Theatre of Operations during World War II. Comtech Fire Credit Union sponsored the web adaptation of this outstanding secondary level (grades 9-12) teaching tool to ensure that today's young people will be aware of the incredible contribution and sacrifice made by the Canadian Navy during the Second World War.
